Cthulhu Wants To Be Free

— What is Open Cthulhu? —

Open Cthulhu is a tabletop roleplaying game based upon the horrific writing of H.P. Lovecraft. It strives to deliver an “old school” gaming experience by stripping back some of the “safety nets” put in place by mainstream games. Unlike those “pulpy” games, protagonists in Open Cthulhu games are seldom powerful and capable individuals, going toe-to-toe with the Cthulhu Mythos and living to tell the tale. Instead, they are everyday individuals, placed in desperate situations with few resources and little chance of escaping with body and sanity intact. But by pushing back the horrors of a cold and uncaring universe, perhaps the human race may cling to its illusion of pre-eminence for a little while longer …

— Playing Open Cthulhu —

Anyone is free to download the Open Cthulhu SRD and begin playing the game. In fact, we would encourage you to do exactly that … and then get in touch with us to tell us whether the game works for you and your players (or whether it would benefit from tweaking).

We have been contacted by publishers who have expressed interest in producing a professionally-illustrated version of the game. When and if that happens we would like to incorporate the ideas and feedback from players and game moderators.
